Goddard Academy & Goddard Virtual School
On October 2nd, we participated in the other side of Reality U—as volunteers! Several seniors, including our leadership committee, traveled to Mead Middle School in Wichita to volunteer at booths and guide the middle schoolers through a financial month in their chosen future simulation.
This was a great opportunity to practice leadership and learn new strategies themselves. Thank you Reality U and Mead Middle School for having us!
Science day comes three times a year at Goddard Virtual School. This month, students from 6-12 grade came to build and test launch models and paper rockets. They had PVC pipes and parts to build their launch models from in their own designs.
We tested our rockets on different models to learn what design and combinations made the rocket fly highest and why. We learned that blocking to the air at different points helped the situation by forcing more air toward the rocket, yet also hurt the situation by sometimes causing the launch model to break apart!
This year, rockets soared with a light breeze and did NOT end up on the roof. Whew!
Virtual School has several opportunities for testing and tutoring throughout the year. On Testing and Tutoring Tuesdays, students have the opportunity to spend the day working in-person, to receive personalized, one-on-one tutoring, and to complete unit/topic tests.
We are proud of our dedicated students!
The Wichita Area Builder's Association put together another great event this year for "Build My Future." We joined many other schools at Hartman Arena where various job experiences were set up to give every student a hands-on highlight of what it could be like working in a given trade or career.
Included at various booths were things like scaffolding, welding, painting, caulking—they even got to go inside a fire truck and an ambulance and practice CPR. It was a day full of opportunities!
Mrs. Nuessen's Sociology students traveled the short road over to Amelia Earhart Elementary to read to the 3rd graders over there one afternoon! This was part of a sociology exercise to find lessons in children's books—one they enjoyed so much they wanted to share the experience with younger kids! They took turns reading to the kids and having the kids read to them.
Things went so well that we already have plans being made for a Christmas activity later this year!
This month was Principal Appreciation Month! We are happy to celebrate Mr. Gee, of whom we are lucky to have. Not every school gets to be led by someone that is as involved and dedicated as you. Thank you for everything you do for our kids, staff, and school!
This month's theme was Self-Direct!
We looked for students that did things without any prompting, like getting started on work earlier than usual or asking questions, or even took actions to better their health (going to bed on time, choosing healthy meals, practicing mindfulness).
Congratulations to everyone who got nominated for demonstrating Self-Direction!
Goddard Academy also celebrated other personal achievements at the end of this first nine weeks! This included hard work and dedication to classes and attendance. Congrats everyone!
Congratulations to all our October graduates! The rooms are emptier here without you, but the world is brighter with you in it!
Among our graduates, we have future nurses, machinists, interior designers, cosmetologists, police, HVAC workers, auto workers, radiological technologists, and more!
